via The Columbus Dispatch

The man accused of running down two employees and a patron of a Short North restaurant has turned himself in to Columbus police.  Accompanied by his attorney, Michael A. Rose, 43, turned himself in at Columbus police headquarters at 2 p.m. today.  Rose made no statement and was taken to the Franklin County jail tonight.

Court records show Rose has a lengthy record of traffic and criminal arrests, including drunken-driving convictions in 1994 and 2006. He was due in court Tuesday for a probation violation.

Rose also is named in an eight-count indictment from January charging him with identity theft, misuse of a credit card and receiving stolen property. His trial date is June 11 in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Waiters and bartenders have created the Haiku Help Fund to assist the victims.

Via Resturant Widow

Thursday night, in an incomprehensible act of senseless violence, Haiku owner Julie Liu and Haiku server Rachel Widomski were purposefully run over by a diner who ran out on his check.  According to the Dispatch, Ms Liu is in serious condition and Ms Widomski is in critical condition - very serious, from what I understand from her friends.  The driver fled the scene after hitting another person in the parking lot who was not seriously injured.

From Chef John Folse. One thing about the summertime in Louisiana, it not only brings about huge amounts of fresh tomatoes coming from the garden, but at the same time the urge to fire up the old bar-b-que pit. This interesting recipe allows you to take the bounty from the garden and create a unique sauce that’s perfect with steaks, chicken or fish on the gril...

Ingredients:

  • 10 pounds Creole Tomatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 3 cups diced onions
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons mace
  • 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 tablespoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Steen’s Cane Syrup
  • 1/3 cup lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Louisiana Hot Sauce

This is another of my favorite recipes.  It caught my eye while surfing the web one day and I just had to try it.  I'm a sucker for anything meat-pie related.

I have a variation of this I'll be posting later in the week as a "Sunday Dinner" recipe but this one takes considerable less effort to make.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green chili pepper
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Chipotle powder (or regular chili powder)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough ("Grands" work well since they're so large)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
