Daddy Sams' delivers a Kansas City style barbecue sauce with a bite.  Based on an old family recipe, created by Daddy Sam himself, the sauce is a great compliment to chick and pork.

"Good goods are never cheap.  Cheap goods are never good." was all I saw while waiting for my turn at the House of Meats...  That was enough to get me to  take a closer look.  The distinctive packaging and the fact that I'm a sucker for new sauces made it a certainty that I'd pick up a bottle to try. Boy am I glad I did!

Apon cracking open the bottle you're greeted with the sight of a thick rich sauce.  The sauce is so dark red it's almost brown.  The sauce easily clings to a spoon leaving a nice thick coat of sauce with intermittent flecks of spices.  The smell is about what you'd expect from this style of sauce tomato with strong molasses notes and a hint on vinegar.

Ingredients: Ketchup (tomato paste, water, sugar, distilled vinegar, salt, onion powder, dextrose. natural flavor), molasses, sugar, mustard (distilled vinegar, water, mustard seed, salt, turmeric, paprika, spice, natural flavor, garlic powder), ginger, jalapeño peppers, pepper sauce (peppers, distilled vinegar, salt), jalapeño pepper powder, onion powder, dehydrated garlic, spices, natural smoke flavor.

It seems a lot more complicated than it is due to fact that every component that has ingredients  has to have them listed.  A lot of companies will hide things like MSG under the umbrella of spice or "natural flavors"... I was happy to see that Daddy Sam's is free of MSG, thickeners, gluten, starch and high fructose syrup.  That's a big plus in my book!

Fresh off the spoon you get the swet & tangy barbecue flavor Kansas City styles are known for.  As you swallow the ginger bites the back of your thoat and you get a warming across your tongue from the jalapeno. There's not a lot of heat here but it's noticeable, a solid 2 or 3 on a 1 - 10 scale. While it's not a medium from a chili heads perspective it's a spot on rating for normal folks.  This is something I could give my mother and hear "wow that's really spicy" but have immediately followed by "can I have some more?".

Since cracking open my first bottle a few weeks ago this has become a staple sauce for me.  Out of the handful of barbecue sauces in my fridge I find myself reaching for this more often than not.  It's worth picking up a bottle (or two) if you come across it in the store.  If you're not lucky enough to have it carried locally,  you can order online at their website.
